UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
The Department of Sociology at the University of Aberdeen enjoys a reputation as one of the leading centres for the study of sociology in the United Kingdom (UK), being recognised both nationally and internationally for the outstanding quality of its teaching as well as its research. Recent assessments of sociology departments in the UK ranked the department very highly, as no less than 5th in the UK in the latest Complete University Guide (2017). The most recent national assessment of teaching quality judged us as ‘Excellent’, the highest mark attainable while, in terms of research quality, we were ranked us as joint sixth in the UK in the current national research assessment and one of the top two departments in Scotland.
Our success is driven by the quality of our academic staff, who have gained international reputations for conducting high-quality research and an enviable reputation for their teaching. Our staff have an international focus, engaging with some of the most important issues and question confronting contemporary societies at a global as well as local level. Aberdeen Sociology staff specialise in areas as diverse as global conflict and peace studies; global political economy; religion and secularisation; identities and well-being and even the relationship between humans and other animals. All of the latter is also reflected in our research lead teaching model, where our students are introduced to the various theories, research methods and bodies of knowledge that equip them to explore and understand many of the most important issues of our times.
